A Warm Winter Dinner Party
By: Southern Hospitality Company

When the air is crisp and the days are shorter, there’s no better time to gather around the table with loved ones. This January, we celebrated a special occasion with a dinner party that combined warmth, elegance, and the comfort of home. Hosted in Georgia—where winters don’t get too chilly but still offer the perfect excuse to stay cozy indoors—we embraced the winter season with a table setting that was both inviting and beautiful, reflecting the charm of Southern hospitality. This dinner wasn’t just about the meal—it was a celebration of Ashlyn’s birthday, with a special Italian-inspired menu to honor her favorite cuisine and a gathering of immediate family to share in the joy.
A Thoughtfully Curated Table Setting: Textures and Layers for Winter Elegance
Julie’s home is naturally neutral, with creamy whites and soft linens that provide a calm and welcoming backdrop. However, with this dinner being held in the winter months, we wanted to bring in some added depth and texture to the table setting to create a sense of warmth and seasonal charm. The block print artichoke green tablecloth paired with matching napkins added a touch of color and pattern without overwhelming the neutral tones. The green was a subtle nod to winter’s evergreen shades, while the intricate block print evoked a sense of sophistication that still felt relaxed.
To add dimension to the setting, we used rolled seagrass placemats, which provided a natural and earthy feel. These paired beautifully with the bamboo flatware and bamboo napkin rings, which not only matched the flatware but also lent a cohesive touch to the overall theme. The natural textures of bamboo complemented the cane vase centerpiece, which we filled with freshly cut magnolia branches—a true Southern classic. The magnolia’s glossy, dark green leaves and tobacco underside created a stunning focal point for the table that add richness and compliment the textures used in the table setting.

The Flicker of Candlelight: Creating Ambiance with Glass Votives
As the evening unfolded, we wanted to enhance the ambiance with soft, flickering candlelight. To do so, we added thick glass votives around the cane vase, casting a warm, inviting glow across the table. The candles not only provided light but also added a layer of intimacy to the gathering, making it feel cozy and personal—just right for a family celebration. The candles, paired with the natural textures of the magnolia and bamboo, created an atmosphere that felt both elegant and approachable.

The Menu: A Celebration of Italian Flavors
As much as the setting and decor were important, it was the food that truly brought the evening together. For Ashlyn, who has always had a passion for Italian cuisine, the menu was a reflection of her favorite flavors. We began with a simple but flavorful rosemary focaccia, warm from the oven and perfect for sharing. The bread was paired with a fresh Italian salad, featuring crisp greens, tangy vinaigrette, and just the right amount of bite.
The main course was a comforting yet sophisticated white lasagna with pesto. This dish combined the richness of a creamy béchamel sauce with the fresh, herby goodness of basil pesto, creating a satisfying and flavorful dish that was both decadent and light at the same time. The layers of fresh pasta and ricotta provided the perfect balance of texture, and the addition of pesto was a nice twist on a classic.
To end the meal, we served a rich and indulgent pistachio tiramisu. This twist on the traditional Italian dessert swapped out the classic cocoa for a delicious pistachio flavor, adding a nutty depth to the creamy mascarpone layers. It was the perfect finish to a memorable evening.

Red Wine Pairing: A Bold and Beautiful Option
While the menu was designed around comforting and fresh flavors, we opted for a red wine to pair with the richness of the lasagna. A Chianti Classico—a medium-bodied red wine with balanced acidity—was the perfect choice. Its bright cherry notes and subtle herbal undertones complemented the creamy lasagna while offering enough depth to stand up to the flavors of the pesto. Chianti is always a classic pairing with Italian food, and it helped bring the meal together beautifully.
Celebrating in Style: The Personal Touches That Made the Evening Special
This dinner party was about more than just a meal—it was about creating an experience that felt personal and memorable. The table setting, with its mix of textures and thoughtful details, set the tone for a relaxed yet elegant evening. From the personalized Southern Hospitality Company invitations and menu cards to the delicate bamboo napkin rings and hand-written place cards, every detail was carefully considered to reflect the warmth of the season and the significance of the occasion.
What made the evening truly special was the shared experience of a family meal. In a world that often moves too quickly, there’s something incredibly grounding about coming together over a delicious meal, celebrating a milestone, and savoring each moment. We may not go “full winter” here in Georgia, but we embraced the season with open arms—creating a space where warmth, good food, and great company could shine.
