How to Make a Luxurious Sugar Scrub at Home
By: Southern Hospitality Company
I’ve always loved giving people things. Not grand things. Just small, unexpected offerings. A handwritten note. A jar of something homemade. A scrub that makes your hands feel like they belong to someone who drinks enough water and remembers to take deep breaths.
This sugar scrub came out of that instinct. It’s nothing revolutionary. It’s sugar and oil and scent. But somehow, when you stir them together with the right kind of attention, it turns into something a little more than the sum of its parts.
I make it often now. I keep it near the sink and use it when the day has felt too sharp or too fast. Recently, I made a batch before hosting a dinner. I tucked it into blue glass candle jars, tied on one of our Southern Hospitality Co. gift enclosure tags… simple, unassuming. The kind of detail that feels like a wink instead of a bow.

The Scrub
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- You can swap white sugar for brown sugar if you prefer a slightly coarser texture and a warmer, more natural scent. Brown sugar feels a bit gentler on the skin, making it great for sensitive areas. Either way, it’s your call… both work beautifully.
- ½ cup coconut oil room temperature
- 1 tablespoon castor oil
- Castor oil is rich in fatty acids that help moisturize and protect skin. It supports healing and softness, making it perfect for a scrub meant to refresh and soothe. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties, which can calm irritation without fuss.
- 10 to 15 drops of essential oil
- I used rosemary and lavender that evening. It’s a scent that feels clean without smelling like a cleaning product. Herbal. Restorative. Like a deep breath.
You mix it all in a bowl with a spoon, an electric mixer, or your fingers, depending on your mood. There’s no real wrong here, just adjust the texture until it feels right. Like something you’d want on your skin. It should hold together softly, without being greasy or stiff.

Scent Pairings:
For the early riser (or the one who wants to be):
– Eucalyptus + lemon
– Rosemary + mint
For calm:
– Lavender + vetiver
– Frankincense + cedarwood
For sweetness with edge:
– Orange + black pepper
– Geranium + clove
You don’t need to be an expert to make something lovely. You just need to pay attention.

Presentation, If You’re Giving It Away
Old candle jars are perfect. I wanted to gift multiple of the same jar, so I purchased these blue candle jars here. A gift tag and ribbon make it feel complete without overthinking it. The kind of packaging that lets the contents speak for themselves.
I didn’t set out to make a thing worth writing about. I just wanted to send my guests home with something they’d actually use. Something that might catch them off guard the next morning, when they remember, briefly, how the night before had felt.
That’s the quiet power of a thoughtful gift. It lingers.
