Classic Hugo Spritz (Plus 7 Variations To Try)
By: Ashlyn Walters / Southern Hospitality Company
It begins with a whisper of wildflowers… cool, clean, and unexpected. A breeze rolls in, heavy with the scent of elderflower, crisp mint, and the faintest trace of lime. The first sip is a sigh: delicate bubbles dancing over your tongue, a kiss of sweetness wrapped in something green and alive. It’s not just refreshing, it’s transportive.
The Hugo Spritz doesn’t shout for attention. It seduces. Light yet complex, it evokes barefoot evenings in the garden, golden light flickering through leaves, and the quiet luxury of slowing down. Born in the alpine villages of Northern Italy, this cocktail is a love letter to summer—elegant, effortless, and utterly irresistible.
Whether you’re chasing the sun or letting it linger on your skin, the Hugo invites you to pause, breathe, and savor.
Ingredients
- 1 oz (30 ml) Elderflower Liqueur is the floral soul of the drink. With notes of lychee, pear, and citrus blossom, it adds sweetness and aromatic depth.
- 4 oz (120 ml) Prosecco brings bright acidity and bubbles, balancing the liqueur’s sweetness with a crisp, dry finish.
- 1 oz (30 ml) Soda Water adds a gentle dilution and extra sparkle, keeping the drink light and refreshing.
- 3–4 Mint Leaves offer a cool, herbal note that enhances the cocktail’s fresh character.
- 1-2 Lime Slices add a zesty lift, tying all the flavors together with a touch of acidity.
- Ice keeps the drink crisp and cool, while slightly diluting the cocktail for a more balanced sip over time.

Directions:
- Gently muddle the mint in a large wine glass to release its aroma—just a soft press is enough.
- Fill the glass with ice.
- Pour in the elderflower liqueur, followed by the Prosecco.
- Top with soda water to add a light effervescence.
- Stir gently to combine.
- Garnish with lime slices and a fresh sprig of mint.
