Leading with Character: The Positive Athlete Impact

March Organization Spotlight

As we step into March, we’re excited to share the story of an organization that’s incredibly close to our hearts—Positive Athlete. Founded by Julie’s husband and Ashlyn’s father, Scott Pederson, in partnership with his son, Ryan Pederson, Positive Athlete is all about celebrating student-athletes who lead with character, positivity, and a sense of responsibility to their communities. From the beginning, Scott and Ryan have been passionate about recognizing not just athletic achievement, but also the leadership and kindness these athletes show both on and off the field. Together, they’ve built an organization that helps young athletes understand that being a true champion means making a positive impact in the world.

What is Positive Athlete?

Positive Athlete is more than just a feel-good award—it’s a reminder that being a champion isn’t just about the game-winning touchdown or the perfect score. It’s about how you lift others up, how you lead by example, and how you use your success to make a difference.

Each year, Positive Athlete honors student-athletes who don’t just shine on the field or court, but who shine in life. These are the athletes who volunteer their time, mentor younger students, and show up for their community in ways that truly make a difference. They’re the quiet leaders, the ones who may not always be in the spotlight but are always there to encourage their teammates, lend a hand, or take on a leadership role when it matters most.

It’s not just about stats or trophies—it’s about character.

Why Does Positive Athlete Matter?

Positive Athlete is having a real impact on our community. When starting this organization, the goal was simple: to create a space where positivity and good character could be celebrated just as much as athletic achievement. The goal was to recognize the athletes who are doing the right thing, even when no one’s watching.

Since its inception, Positive Athlete has awarded over $550,000 in scholarships to students who show not only athletic ability but leadership, community service, and character. These scholarships have opened doors for young people to pursue their dreams of going to college—students who might otherwise have struggled to afford it. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of what Positive Athlete does: helping deserving students take the next step in their education and careers.

Each year, Positive Athlete receives thousands of nominations from coaches, teachers, and community leaders who recognize athletes that embody the values this organization holds dear. These young athletes are honored with Positive Athlete awards, and they become part of a growing community of leaders who inspire others to do the same.

How You Can Get Involved: Nominate a Student-Athlete Today

One of the most powerful ways to get involved with Positive Athlete is by nominating a student-athlete you believe deserves to be recognized. You don’t have to be a coach or teacher—anyone can nominate an athlete who goes above and beyond.

I can tell you from personal experience that seeing the faces of these athletes when they get recognized—it’s priceless. The joy, the pride, the excitement—it’s not just about the award; it’s about knowing that their hard work, kindness, and leadership are being seen and valued.

So, how do you nominate?

  • Who Can Nominate?
Anyone! Coaches, teachers, community members—if you know a student who is making a positive impact through their sport and in their community, you can nominate them.
  • What Happens When You Nominate?
By nominating a student, you’re telling them, “We see you. We value what you’re doing.” And that’s huge. Nominated athletes are considered for awards and scholarships that can make a real difference in their lives. Plus, you’re helping to spread the message that positivity, character, and leadership are just as important as winning the game.
  • How to Nominate:
It’s easy—head to Positive Athlete’s Nomination Page, fill out a simple form, and share why you believe the athlete you’re nominating is making a positive difference. Whether it’s their role as a mentor, their volunteer work, or how they lift up their teammates, this is your chance to recognize someone who truly deserves it.

Real Stories, Real Impact

One remarkable story of resilience and leadership comes from Landon Hagwood, a football player at Oconee County High School in Watkinsville, GA. Landon’s journey took an unexpected turn when he suffered a shoulder injury during a football game and went in for surgery. However, the scans revealed something far more serious: cancer. Landon faced 14 rounds of chemotherapy, but his determination to stay positive and make an impact only grew stronger.

While undergoing treatment, Landon noticed a gap in the hospital’s resources for older children and teens. While there were plenty of activities and supplies for younger kids, he realized there was nothing for high schoolers like him. In particular, he discovered that the hospital lacked appropriately-sized pajamas for older children. Instead of focusing on his own struggles, Landon decided to take action. He reached out to his community and organized a drive, collecting 400 pairs of pajamas for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA).

After months of treatment and hoping for a clean bill of health, Landon received unexpected news at his nine-month scan. His cancer had relapsed, and he would have to start his journey all over again. But even in the face of this setback, Landon remained steadfast. Relying on his faith, trust, and the support of those around him, Landon fought with everything he had. Today, Landon is cancer-free, and his story stands as a powerful reminder of what it means to lead with resilience, kindness, and the heart of a champion.

The Bigger Picture

Positive Athlete is about more than just a few athletes—it’s about creating a movement. A movement where positivity is celebrated, leadership is recognized, and kindness is just as valued as athletic prowess. We believe that the more we recognize these traits, the more they’ll be passed on to the next generation.

As we reflect on the incredible work Positive Athlete is doing, we invite you to think about the athletes in your life who are making a positive impact. Maybe it’s the quiet leader in the locker room, the teammate who always has your back, or the athlete who volunteers their time outside of practice. These are the future leaders of our communities, and they deserve to be celebrated.

So, take a moment this month to nominate a student-athlete who’s making a difference. Let’s keep building a culture where positivity is the real win.
