Exploring Round Top, Texas: A Timeless Antiques Adventure
By: Southern Hospitality Company

Round Top, Texas, isn’t your average small town. If it were, you’d probably drive through it without so much as a second glance, blinking as you miss the turnoff and end up at the next spot on your road trip. But Round Top? It’s an institution. Twice a year, this sleepy dot on the map transforms into a mecca for antique lovers, home décor aficionados, and people who simply like to wander through fields in search of that one thing they never knew they needed.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I joined my mom, her sorority sisters, and their daughters for the weekend. All I knew was that we were there to shop, eat, laugh, and repeat. Oh, and to make a few memory-filled stops at the local margarita stand. My mom and her friends had been making the pilgrimage to Round Top for decades, going all the way back to when they were in college at TCU. It’s a tradition that’s stuck around longer than any of their college textbooks. There’s something magical about sharing a weekend with people who have been friends for that long. The girls who know your quirks, your favorite foods, and the things that make you laugh until your face hurts. So when they invited me, I jumped at the chance to be part of it.
The weather was absolutely perfect—bright, crisp, and not a cloud in sight—the kind of weather that makes you want to sip something cold and walk until you feel like your feet might actually give up on you. There were tents, there were antiques, and there were people who knew exactly what they were looking for, unlike me, who was just hoping to find something cute to put on my counter (I guess that’s an impulse purchase?).
But that’s the beauty of Round Top. It’s about more than just the shopping; it’s about being part of something that feels like it’s been going on forever… and probably has. You can get lost in the thousands of treasures, but the magic is in the stories they tell. And let’s face it, if I end up with a few too many rustic chairs, well, that’s just part of the adventure.

A Shopper’s Paradise: Where to Go, What to Find, and Why You Should Probably Bring a Bigger Car
In Round Top, the experience of shopping is as diverse as the items you’ll find. And you’ll find everything from 19th-century English armoires to a vintage chair that probably belongs in an art museum, but hey, it fits my home. It’s not just about the antiques; it’s about the hunt. So here’s a guide to the best places to spend your time (and let’s be real, your money).

1. The Big Red Barn
If Round Top had a Hollywood Walk of Fame, The Big Red Barn would be the star. This place is where you’ll find pristine antiques, serious collectors, and enough high-end décor to make you feel like you walked onto the set of a period drama. It’s indoors, which means you can enjoy browsing in air-conditioned comfort, and trust me, you’ll want that after a few hours in the sun.
Here, the focus is on high-quality, rare antiques: colonial-era furniture, delicate porcelain, and glassware that might have been passed down for generations. I’m pretty sure that when I walked in, I felt like I was trespassing into an exclusive club, one where everyone’s cooler than me. But in a good way. There’s something specials about the rich history of these items… like when you find a vintage mirror that makes you think, “This was probably hung over the fireplace in a grand estate…before the internet was even a thing.”
2. The Continental Tent
It’s easy to get lost in this sprawling tent, and you will, mostly because there’s just so much to look at. The Continental Tent is where style meets comfort. It’s a place where you can find elegant French armoires next to bold mid-century modern furniture. It’s like someone took all the best design trends and said, “Let’s just throw them all together and see what happens.”
In here, it’s all about the statement pieces. You’ll find gorgeous restored mirrors, antique lighting that probably has a rich backstory (who else can say they bought a light fixture that once hung in a French chateau?), and furniture that could easily be mistaken for museum pieces. But unlike museums, these pieces are ready to make your living room feel more chic. The best part? The relaxed vibe of the place means you don’t feel rushed. You can actually take your time to envision that artwork in your living room (and then text your partner to tell them why they need to approve the purchase).

3. Blue Hills
If Blue Hills were a person, it would be that quirky friend who loves a good flea market. Blue Hills is where you go for vintage eclecticism, where rustic farmhouse décor and vintage collectibles come together in a happy chaos. The tents are wide and spacious, with each booth offering something new, whether it’s vintage books, rustic furniture, or that cool piece of vintage jewelry you’ll proudly wear for the next 10 years.
Unlike the more polished venues, Blue Hills has a relaxed, laid-back vibe, and that’s what makes it so fun. It’s a bit of a treasure hunt, and you never know what you’re going to find tucked in a corner. Sometimes, you’ll walk past something and think, “Is this a sign from the universe?” You know, like when you see a beautiful, vintage pillow that happens to match your living room perfectly—no big deal.
4. The Fields
The Fields might be the best-kept secret of Round Top. Stretching over 11 miles of land, this sprawling collection of tents and booths is where you’ll find the more offbeat, quirky treasures from antique kitchenware to vintage posters. The best part? The sense of discovery as you wander from tent to tent, each one offering something unique. It’s like a mini treasure map where you’re the explorer and the gold is that perfect piece of vintage décor you never knew you needed.
It’s also the place for that random find like a worn leather book or a collection of antique matchbooks. It’s the kind of place that encourages you to think outside the box and go with your gut. I mean, who wouldn’t want a vintage postcard from the 1940s or a collection of antique tobacco pipes? That’s the beauty of The Fields: it’s unpredictable and wonderfully weird.

Cherished Traditions: A Legacy of Friendship and Discovery
For my mom and her sorority sisters, Round Top isn’t just an event, it’s a part of their tradition. I couldn’t help but smile as they reminisced about their college days at TCU, back when they were young, carefree, and perhaps a little less wise with their credit cards. Their yearly pilgrimage has become a tradition, a rite of passage for them and now, for me.
At the end of each day, we gathered to share our finds. One by one, we showed off our treasures, like kids comparing their Halloween candy. It was less about the items themselves (although let’s be real, I did find a pretty amazing blue butter crock) and more about the memories we were creating. These moments of sharing and laughing about our finds felt like an extension of their college days when everything was about making memories. Except this time, we were doing it with better taste in décor.
Culinary Delights: Savoring Local Flavors
As if the shopping wasn’t enough, Round Top also delivers on the food front. Whether it’s BBQ, margaritas, or kettle corn (because let’s face it, kettle corn is a lifestyle), there’s no shortage of deliciousness to fuel your shopping adventure.
We also had a fantastic dinner at Boon & Co., an absolute gem of a spot. With a gorgeous interior and exterior that mixes industrial charm with chic, modern touches, it’s the kind of place that feels both luxurious and comfortable. Picture exposed beams, large windows letting in natural light, and soft lighting that makes the whole place feel like it’s straight out of a design magazine. We sipped crisp glasses of wine, indulged in artisanal pizzas, and enjoyed rich, flavorful pasta. It was the perfect end to a day of shopping and wandering. We had been recommended to check out Lulu’s, but the hostess humorously told us getting a reservation there was like trying to book a table in Manhattan on New Year’s Eve. We made a mental note for next time!

A Weekend to Remember: Connecting with the Past and Present
As the sun set on each day, we gathered around to share our finds and laugh about the day’s adventures. We weren’t just shopping; we were weaving the past and present together. And really, what’s better than that?
Round Top isn’t just a town. It’s a place where tradition meets discovery, where every corner holds something unexpected, and where the people you’re with make it all the more unforgettable. So, whether you’re in search of antique treasures, unique home décor, or just a weekend full of laughter and memories, Round Top is the perfect destination to experience it all.
