The Preppy Podcast: Monograms

Monograms have long been symbols of personal identity and elegance. Whether displayed on linens, stationery, or accessories, a monogram is more than just an initial—it’s a reflection of tradition, sophistication, and attention to detail. If you’re considering incorporating monograms into your personal or professional life, understanding the etiquette behind their use is essential. Here’s a guide to navigating monogram etiquette with grace.

Recently, I had the privilege of being a guest on The Preppy Podcast, where I shared insights about the art of monogramming. During our conversation, we delved into the fascinating history of monograms, explored their timeless appeal, and discussed the latest trends shaping the monogramming world today. Here’s a recap of some of the key takeaways from the podcast and more.

1. What is a Monogram?

A monogram typically consists of one or more letters, often the initials of a person’s name, interwoven or stylized to create a unique design. Historically, monograms were used as personal seals, and they have evolved into decorative elements that can be found on everything from towels to handbags.

2. Basic Monogram Rules

For a Couple: When creating a monogram for a married couple, the standard is to place the wife’s first initial, followed by the couple’s shared last name initial (larger and in the center), and then the husband’s first initial. For example, if Mary and John Smith were married, their monogram would read “M S J.”

For an Individual: A traditional monogram for a single person is often made using the first, last, and middle initials. The last initial is typically larger than the others and placed in the center, flanked by the first and middle initials on either side. For example, if your name is Mary Jane Smith, your monogram would be “M S J” with “S” being the larger central letter.

During my recent appearance on The Preppy Podcast, I had the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of monogramming. We explored the rich history of monograms, from their use as personal seals to their place in modern-day fashion and home décor. We also talked through current trends, like the rise of digital monograms and how monogramming has evolved from a luxury item to a more accessible way for people to personalize their belongings.

It was exciting to share my passion for monogramming and how it’s woven into preppy culture and style. You can listen to the full episode for more details about how monogramming continues to adapt to the times while remaining a timeless symbol of personal elegance.
